How to Choose the Right Health Insurance Plan
ACA marketplace plans are organized by metal levels: Catastrophic, Bronze, Silver, Gold, and Platinum. The metal level determines how you and your plan split costs — it does not reflect the quality of care or which doctors you can see.
Lower metal levels (Bronze, Catastrophic) have lower monthly premiums but higher out-of-pocket costs when you use care. Higher metal levels (Gold, Platinum) have higher premiums but cover a larger share of your costs, with lower deductibles and copays.
Silver plans are unique: if your income is 100-250% of the Federal Poverty Level, Silver plans include Cost-Sharing Reductions (CSR) that significantly lower your deductible and out-of-pocket maximum — often making Silver the best value regardless of your usage level.
